Meiosis

Meiosis is commonly confused with sexual reproduction due to the fact that meiosis is the production of sex cells such as sperm and ova.  However, meiosis is actually asexual reproduction because the resulting sex cells produced are produced from one diploid cell.

Always remember that sex cells are HAPLIOD, meaning that they only have a single set of chromosomes (23 in humans).  Unlike DIPLOID cells that have paired chromosomes (46 in humans).

Meiosis is essentially the division of the nuclues twice.  Here one diploid cell replicates its DNA and divides it between 4 new haploid cells that form gametes or sex cells.  This is obviously a very abbreviated version of the meiotic process......maybe this video will help!!
